Go! Drive & Camp

No shot in the dark

What does a slingshot, a campsite next to the river, and a smoky fire have in common? Why, a fish on the line, of course.

RAASWATER RIVER LODGE Quiet time

The Vaal River is known for its fishing resorts. From about 30 km south of Potchefstroom the river takes a southwesterly turn and connects with the Orange River 400 km on. And this is where Raaswater lies on the North West side of the river.

Raaswater’s fishing shore is a kilometre long, and the campsite, which also borders on the shore, is far right as you drive through the gate. You can pitch camp right next to the water, but because of the 100-year flood line, the nearest power socket is 50 m away.

The stands are not demarcated and you can choose your own spot. There’s space for about 10 caravans next to the water, with more stands away from the river. The entire campsite is flat with grass, shade trees and one ablution block (which includes a washing-up area). There are no brick braais, but there are a few loose-standing steel braais that you can take to your stand.

There are also three jetties from which you can fish. Some of the facilities on the jetty include a table, six chairs, a canopy, braai, basin with cold water, electricity and lights, in case you feel like fishing till the early morning hours. To make use of a jetty will set you back R300 per day.

The cold-water pool is close to the office and there’s a play park nearby. The shop has a liquor licence and sells basic provisions. It’s open during the week and on Saturdays from 8 am to 5 pm and Sundays and public holidays from 8 am to 1 pm.

The owners request that you release the yellowfish, and you’ll get a fine if you don’t.
