BUTTERMILK DOUGHNUTS WITH CARAMEL SAUCE

-

Pour the caramel sauce into a deep tin plate and let everyone dunk their doughnuts into it as they come out of the pot.

Ingredients

(serves 8)

2 cups cake flour

¼ cup sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ cup sunflower oil

180 ml buttermilk

1 large egg sunflower oil for deep-frying

FOR THE CARAMEL DIPPING SAUCE

1 can (400 g) Caramel Treat ½ cup cream

½ teaspoon fine cinnamon

Here’s how

1 Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and baking soda in a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the middle.

2 Mix the oil, buttermilk and egg together in a separate bowl. Pour into the middle of the flour mixture and then slowly mix in the dry ingredients.

3 Heat enough oil in a pot to deep-fry the doughnuts. Test the heat – if a small piece of bread floats and bubbles but doesn’t burn, it’s ready.

4 Dish spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and cooked through. Don’t fry too many at once because then the oil will cool down. Place the doughnuts on kitchen towel to absorb the excess oil.

5 Make the caramel dipping sauce. Heat the caramel, cream and cinnamon together and stir until the mixture is smooth. Serve as a dipping sauce for the doughnuts.

Melted chocolate and cream with a dash of brandy is also a delicious sauce for the doughnuts. Or instead of the cinnamon, add a tablespoon of peanut butter.
