Go! Drive & Camp

A fisherman’s friend

With this homemade trailer he can make himself at home next to the water and try to hook a big one, says Apie Geldenhuys from De Aar.

I bought this trailer a few years ago from a guy in Colesberg after his son told me his dad wanted to get rid of the thing. The guy was getting on in years and couldn’t use the trailer himself anymore.

He had built the trailer himself. I think it was an ordinary trailer with a bakkie canopy on it to create the bed on wheels.

I went to have a look and saw it was exactly what I needed for my fishing excursions. I really enjoy camping next to the fishing waters over weekends and this trailer has everything I need to comfortably do what I want to do.

Inside is big enough for a three-quarter mattress. This I put on two wooden pallets so that I don’t sleep entirely on the ground. There are two fans on the roof to circulate the air and keep things cool inside. There’s also a light against the roof and a 220 V power socket so I can make my coffee inside the trailer.

Above the bed is a space with shelves for my bags and clothes and other loose odds and sods, and it’s nice that it has a roof rack on top for the rest of the luggage, my rods and fishing gear.

I used to tow the trailer with my Opel Kadett, but I sold it and now I tow it with my Ford Bantam.

I’m super chuffed with my trailer and it really turns heads whenever I drive into a campsite. People usually come over and ask if they can have a closer look. You don’t see something like this every day of the week.
