2020: already on a roll!

- EDITOR schalk.jonker@media24.com

Our office, during the final few weeks of the year is not a place for the faint of heart. In the five weeks before we leave our desks for a while to spend time with our loved ones, we still have to get through four more deadlines. So, it came as no surprise that I just had to explain to the bean counters why the office coffee machine is suddenly grinding twice as many beans as usual.

Other than the magazine you’re holding right now and the upcoming February issue, the team will also be sending our Activity book and this year’s Resort guide to the printers.

You can see why we’ve had little time to fret about New Year’s resolutions. Besides, after Cyril’s trip to the Doodsakker, and Evan joining the Conqueror guys towing an off-road trailer through the desert to the Kunene estuary (and that’s after exploring Mongolia in an off-road vehicle), I’m not exactly sure what remains for them in terms of bucket-list destinations in the New Year.

These are the kind journeys that come your way once in a lifetime if you’re lucky, and I’m grateful they can share these far-flung destinations with you – may their tales spur on adventures of your own.

Should you opt to stay closer to home, though, and visit places more within striking distance, we’ve also got a treat for you: our Resort guide for 2020.

You get the lowdown on 60 camping and fishing resorts we’ve visited, but this year we’ve included our readers’ top 20 favourite resorts. We let them tell you why they love it there and why they believe you should chill at their beloved spot.

There was a prize at stake for those readers who sent us their entries, and it was such a pleasure to let Martie and At Kruger of Bethlehem know that they can start planning a week of camping at the Forever campsite of their choice.

So, get the Resort guide and start planning your next 12 months (on shelf from 6 January), too. And remember to pick up a copy or three of the Activity book for your kids and grandkids – that one’s already available.

Safe travels!
