That leaves the bathroom

About a year ago, Stealth launched its unique outdoor shower as an optional extra for the Evolution.

It is a pop-up shower with two compartments: a dry cubicle as you get in, then next to it is the section where you shower. The water pump is an improvement over the one used in the first models and the electric geyser is a standard fixture.

The shower fits existing models and is attached to the back of the caravan. It has a fibreglass roof that is almost as long as the caravan is wide and is fastened with hinges to the caravan. As you lift the roof, the canvas sides lower to the ground to form the two cubicles.

The shower cubicle has LEDs in the roof and a PVC floor with a mesh edge around it to allow the water to drain.

What is it?

A carboard tray that holds 18 eggs should do the trick. Wood is the preferred fuel of choice for many an avid camper but when you’re in a pinch, placing briquettes in the individual egg holders will work just as well.

Does it work?

We recommend using the instant lighting briquette variety, otherwise you’ll light the four corners of the egg carton only to end up with a smouldering mess.

The instant lighting briquettes ignite a lot easier, but usually come in brown paper bags that end up as little pieces of burnt paper that leave ashes all over the place.

With an egg carton, there’s no unnecessary ash. Yes, this one works. But you need to be patient.

What is it?

Everyone loves good oldfashioned matches, and if you store them properly, then you’ll be able to do soemthing that’s a little trickier with a lighter.

It should be possible for you to fall into water with these and still be able to use them afterward to start the fire you need to dry your clothes and start the evening meal.

Does it work?

Yes. These small plastic containers come with a screw cap and should be good for a quick dip.

Rather than gluing the lighting strip to the top of the container as the original camping hack recommends, you should rather stick it to the inside of the lid where the red phosphate won’t be damaged.

What is it?

The interlocking mats that you use in the kids’ bedroom, like what you might find at a crèche or pre-school, or even at the gym, should also make an excellent floor for the inside of your tent, right?

Especially when your children are old enough to no longer need them.

Does it work?

A ground sheet doesn’t really make the inside of your tent comfortable. Even if you don’t have kids, these are relatively inexpensive.

Just make sure that the section of the stand you pitch on is quite level, or that the grass isn’t long, because if your tent floor has humps and bumps, it will affect how well the mats connect.

Get it right, and it makes for a good place to lay down your foam mattress.

What is it?

You know those electric covers that are usually comprised of an orange pill-shaped plastic box that fits your extension leads and socket?

Yes, well those are going to set you back at least R100, but this solution means you get to enjoy a nice tub of ice cream as well make use of the plastic container afterward.

Does it work?

Definitely, and you just need to cut large enough holes so the leads can slip in on either end. Simply cover with the container’s lid afterward.

For added peace of mind you can always use the duct tape to wrap up the holes to make it more weatherproof, and you can line the bottom of the tub with newspaper and cotton wool in case of water ingress.

There are camping hacks aplenty on the web, but some are more effective than others
