BAKKIE CAMPER TEST
Most bakkie campers can only accommodate two people, but the Obiqua offers shelter for four.
Abakkie camper quickly transforms your bakkie into a motorhome. It’s a shell that fits on top of the load bin, and two people sleep on a double bed. Usually, the camper is equipped with camping equipment including a fridge and stove and even a shower or toilet.
André van der Merwe, a fruit farmer from Tulbagh, has been touring and camping for more than 30 years, and he has now designed and built his own take on a bakkie camper.
His camper is similar to other models on the market, but with one major difference: his Obiqua has two double beds, so it sleeps four.
The body of the unit is made of fibreglass with self-extinguishing structural foam core.
When the Obiqua is closed, it fits perfectly into a standard garage. A further bonus is better fuel economy as it doesn’t extend far above the roof of your bakkie.
We borrowed André’s show unit and camped in the Boland for the weekend.
