What you need to know

Length of the route? 315 km (roughly eight hours).

4x4/low range/diff lock? You will be fine with just 4x4.

Maximum number of vehicles No limit. Do I get a map? No, but the route is on Tracks4Afr­ica and you can buy a general Cederberg map in Algeria.

Will I scratch my vehicle? No.

Do I need to remove my running boards? No.

Should I take a compressor? Yes, and bring a handful of slime tyre plugs just in case you fall victim to the R355.

Can I turn around halfway? Yes.

Is there cellphone signal? Mostly, but every now and again it disappears in the mountains and on the R355.

THE ROUTE

Best time to go? In autumn and spring when temperatur­es are moderate.

Can I take my family with me? The Cederberg is a wonderful family destinatio­n, but the young ones could get bored on the long R355.

Just for the day or the weekend? Come for the weekend, as the route will keep you busy all day.

Are there ablutions on the route? You can stop at Algeria, Dwarsrivie­r or the Tankwa farm stall.

Price? These are public roads and therefore free.
