‘Idon’t need therapy – I just need to go camping!’ You’ve probably also seen this meme online while browsing social media. It’s been popping up onto my screen quite often lately and it’s clear that more and more people are feeling this way. It also seems as all that’s on a Facebook group wants to know when we’ll be allowed to go camping again. Much has been said and written about the effect of lockdown on your state of mind. I’m not a psychologist or a psychiatrist, but I think it’s safe to say the effects on people’s mental health aren’t good. When you consider it, that meme about therapy and camping is actually pretty deep. Essayist John Burroughs, a major driver in the creation of nature conservation in America, once said, “I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” And isn’t that exactly what all of us so desperately need now? While the uncertainty of when we will reach which level – and what activities will ultimately be allowed – hangs over our heads, we suffer emotionally because our boundaries have shrunk significantly and we’re not allowed to go anywhere except our immediate environment. The time will come, however, when we can once again set out into nature, where it will generously dish out the healing of which Mr Burroughs speaks.
