Don’t let go

-

Few things are as frustrating as losing your bait as you cast your line. You know the feeling… you just placed the sardine or mackerel head neatly onto the hook, and with the casting, the hook and sinker perform beautifully… but the bait comes off and that’s the end of it.

One solution to this is the Dingle Dangle, which is designed to be used with a circle hook. Consider it an extension of the hook over which the bait fits, plus it has a spot where the sinker hooks up.

Two types are available: one is a bare wire with a loop on the one side that fits over the hook’s barb, and the other has a flotation device covering the wire so the bait doesn’t lie on the bottom, but drifts slightly above it. The hook itself is therefore almost completely open and ready to do its job when the fish bites. The latter is available in four sizes and is perfect for anything from cod to sharks. The smaller ones work well for bait such as fish heads – mackerel, for example – and obviously have less buoyancy than the larger versions.

Because the bait is secured to the Dingle Dangle, you can cast the same bait much farther than if you were doing it the conventional way. The Dingle Dangle is tough enough that it won’t break as it hits the water.

Price From R35 per pack (ranging from three to 10 Dingle Dangles, in different sizes). Available at angling stores nationwide and in Namibia.
