KLIPSPRUIT RIVER RESORT BREATHER ON THE BANKS

The Vaal River is like a lifeline for Gauteng and forms the border between this province and the Free State. And farther downstream, the mighty Vaal also forms the border between the North West and the Free State. It is here, about halfway between Bothaville in the Free State and Leeudoringstad in the North West, where you’ll find the Klipspruit River Resort on its banks. A good 700 m of the 45 ha farm borders the river.

The resort was set up five years ago, explains owner Estelle Debbes. What is now the resort was once an uncultivated piece of land, and they established the first campsite. Today they have two campsites: the Fisherman’s Paradise with 45 stands, and the bush camp, about 300 m upstream, that is a lot more peaceful.

The bush camp has 51 sites, with four of them close to the shore. Fisherman’s Paradise has 10 stands by the water and five of them have a rocky shoreline – perfect for fly-fishing. The rest of the stands are 20-70 m from the water. They’re on grass, and there are shade trees, taps and power points (domestic type). No need to bring your braai along, they’ve got some portable ones for your use.

In contrast to the tranquil atmosphere of the bush camp, Fisherman’s Paradise is a hive of activity. There are two swimming pools and also slides; so it is a fun playground, especially for kids. But if you prefer the call of a fish eagle, the bush camp is for you.

They offer kayak excursions on the river. An hour of fun costs R70 per person.
