“My Grandma always said bees bring luck. They don’t live very long, but work very hard. They don’t stay still for a second and are very difficult to shoot.”

Even though the two bees in the middle form the focal point, you see the red and yellow first. The reason is obvious.

But you quickly realise there’s more to the photo and you look at the two dark bits in the middle. The two bees ‘work’ shoulder to shoulder and it’s easy to identify with the pic as we’ve all seen this. Now you can take your time and look properly, because they’re motionless for a change.

The colour certainly adds to the photo and places emphasis on the focal point because it – just like the vignette in the opposite photos– runs all around it. You just have to be careful about an oversupply of colour.
