Go! Drive & Camp

Daybreak dilemma

-

You may have heard about the importance of finding the right spot, or stand, for your stay. These usually revolve around where you are in a valley, or if you’re on a slope or close to a water source (the latter two can be disastrous if there’s rain predicted).

Another factor is shade during the day. But you’re unlikely to be asleep in your tent at midday when there’s braai banter and children splashing in the nearby pool or river.

What we don’t always consider is how much the sun’s rays can intrude on our slumber, especially if you’ve had a late night. If you use a nylon tent instead of canvas, which keeps ambient light out, then you’re going to be even more susceptible.

If you don’t have a wind break or shade netting that can block out the morning sun, then set up close to natural shelters like hedges or bushes that can block the blinding rays. Or park your vehicle in such a way that it blocks out the sun.

Drive & Camp says If you’re not especially well-versed in the position of the sun during seasons, then a compass is a handy tool in figuring out where the sun is going to rise in the mornings. Determine true north and if you’re pitching late in the afternoon; use the setting sun’s orientation to help you set up camp.
