Go! Drive & Camp

EDITOR’S LETTER

- EDITOR schalk.jonker@media24.com

The last two or three days just before we send the magazine to print, is always exciting. Sure, there’s a mountain of work every time it seems there are too few hours in the day, but this is when I start seeing exactly how the words and photos team up to tell you more about all the interesting places our readers and staff have visited.

This month is no exception. I always leave this letter to do right at the end – my team simply roll their collective eyes – but when I finally get there, I know exactly what is waiting for you inside these 124 pages.

We love doing what we do, and if you’re reading this, I’m assuming you enjoy travelling and camping. Not for us sitting still in one place.

In April, I took an unforgettable journey to Meob Bay in Namibia in the company of some farmers from Patensie and the guys from Algoa Nissan in Humansdorp. (Read my impression of the Patrol we were driving on page 76. I’ll be writing out the trip in an upcoming issue.)

An article I particularly enjoyed in this issue is our reader’s story where Terrence and Debbie Cook of Amanzimtoti tell us about their epic journey through South Africa to the south of Namibia and back.

They’re such good narrators, it feels as though I’m right there with them. I wish it had been me, but it was great to do the road trip vicariously through them.

It is, of course, a great pity to learn they became one of the crime statistics on home soil, but the way they took this setback in their stride, gives me courage.

Thanks for sharing, Terrence and Debbie. It was lovely joining you on your travels.

Stay safe!
