WOELWATERS RAPIDS AND SANDBANKS

Choose from one of 30 sites next to the river – you’ll never be more than 100 m from the water anywhere. The campsite is laid out on three terraces: on the top two, most of the stands have grass with shade trees, but down below by the river, there aren’t any trees. The stands on the bottom two terraces are the largest and good for caravans, while the very top one is only suitable for campers with tents. These stands each have their own concrete braai with a grid, and there are also are two power points that each have two of the normal household sockets – remember a 30 m extension cord in case you’re not close to one of the two power points. The second terrace has room for seven caravans. With grass and shade, these stands are the best of them all. Here you get your own concrete braai with a grid, and each stand also has its own tap.

There’s a power point at every fourth stand. On the lower terrace all the stands have free-standing braais. Behind the third terrace, up the stairs, you’ll find one small ablution block that’s a good 150 m from your stand. On the men’s side are two toilets, two showers and a basin. The shower cubicles don’t have doors; just a shower curtain separates you from the open room. Woelwaters has grown and now extends 400 m next to the river as opposed to the previous 100 m. A new bathroom has also been added where men and women have access to four private bathrooms, plus there’s a separate bathroom with wheelchair access. The office and shop are at the top end of the resort. It stocks basic provisions, and if your two teenagers want to take each other on over a pool table, they can line up here. It works with R5 coins. The two heated indoor pools – one that’s also a new addition – are opposite the office, each in its own room with a passage between the two. In the summer months, cool off in the pool in front of the office while the kids frolic on the slide. You can also get a set of clubs at reception for the mini golf course. Fishing, however, is the thing to do at Woelwaters, especially now the shoreline has been extended. Previously, thanks to the rapids, mainly fly-fishermen could fish here, but now those who aim for the deeper water now also have a better chance. You now have access to a sandbank where you can get decent carp and catfish.
