FLECKVIEH LAND OF MILK AND FISH

At this dairy farm with its Fleckvieh herd, you can buy their own cheese, plus there’s a lovely campsite. Fleckvieh lies on the R322 between Buffeljagsrivier and Heidelberg. If you approach from the Buffeljags side, the road is tarred all the way – go past Suurbraak and the turn-off to Barrydale. If you’re coming from Heidelberg, there’s a 8 km stretch of dirt road. The Grootvadersbos River runs through the 1 030 ha farm, and half of it extends to the Langeberg. But here is also a large dam surrounded by a huge lawn. The campsites are divided into three sections: two on either side of the dam (five and eight stands respectively) and the third next to the river (four stands). All have power points that work with standard household plugs, and there are also taps and braai spots. If your stand doesn’t have a built-up braai, just drag one of the free-standing braais closer to your stand. All the braais have their own grids. Each of the three groups of stands has its own ablution block with a shower, toilet, and basin. The second group of stands next to the dam – those on the side of the mountain – have double facilities. If you’ve come to fish, the stands closest to the dam are the best. It’s home to several species – from black bass, catfish, and kurper, to bluegill and eel. There’s no specific catch-and-release rule here, and pets are welcome in the campsite.
