You can’t go wrong with simplicity. Charmain’s tree stump looks simple, but the knots can distract one from the beautiful patterns in the wood.

If you crop it closer and cut out the knots, you’re left with only the flowing patterns in the wood. Then you also don’t need a focal point, as you enjoy the photo as a whole. You can focus on the individual detail on your own time and follow the patterns as they cut through the wood.

In all of Charmain’s photograph­s, light plays a significan­t role that we have not yet discussed. Nowhere do you see direct sunlight shining on the subject. This soft, uniform light is a smart starting point for creating beautiful photos.
