How and where to mount it?

-

Install a dry chemical powder fire extinguisher below the front passenger seat, at your travel companion’s feet. The fire extinguisher must be secured with a sturdy buckle that unclips easily but won’t open by itself on a bumpy road.

Because space is limited at your travel companion’s feet, you probably won’t be able to mount anything larger than a 1 kg fire extinguisher here. These are small and discharge in 10 seconds or less, which may not be enough time to put out a fire.

Install a second 4 kg fire extinguisher in the boot of your SUV or in your bakkie’s canopy, close to the hatch. While tackling the flames with the 1 kg extinguisher, your travel companion can run to the back to get the larger extinguisher. In the case of an SUV, do mount the 4 kg extinguisher close to the floor, so it can’t fly through the air and hit you on the head in the event of a crash.

Install a CO2 fire extinguisher in your camp kitchen. The stick type – or Fire Stryker – works well, as it doesn’t have an expiration date. If your brekkie pan bursts into flames, it ’s usually enough to simply put a lid on it to suffocate the flames.
