Mooning around

-

Julian Harrison of Bellville prefers the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, but this time, after not visiting the Kruger National Park for the past 32 years, he returned home with this comic photo.

“I took the photo of the three waterbuck mothers and their calves near the Letaba River in the Kruger National Park. When I looked at it again, I realised the juveniles look like grade nine boys trying to grow a beard, while the cows stand there – wide-eyed and watching.”

Julian’s photo is spot-on in terms of separate elements contributing to the overall composition. The three waterbuck on the left immediately catch your attention because it feels as if they’re staring straight at you, but then your eye spontaneously jumps to the right towards the young ones showing you their backsides. The circle around each of their tails almost look like targets…

The two sets of three also enhance the photo without you thinking about it, but then you realise you only see two of the juvenile’s heads, which serves as a slight disruption that gives the photo even more life.

The frame could be cropped from the top and from the right, because those areas don’t contribute to the photo and would further improve the composition.
