Go! Drive & Camp

The Sandveld is calling

If you like camping with family and friends, do add the name Sonwyserskop to your list. This campsite is located on the farm Keurbosch outside Piketberg and belongs to Kokkie and Jo-Anni Coetzee. They farm with grapes, citrus, and cattle, and the campsite is the latest addition to the farm. The idea was to set up a campsite for the Coetzee family so they could host large gatherings. Then Kokkie and his family decided to open the facilities to the public. The section of the farm where they laid out the 20 stands (with 10 domesticsocket power points) already had wellestablished trees, including wild olive and yellowwood trees.

They built four family bathrooms, plus a communal lapa with a fire pit in the middle. There are four built-up braai areas around the fire pit, but there are also freestanding braai drums, should you want to light a fire near your stand. You can buy wood from Jo-Anni if you don’t have any. Next to the campsite is a dam – and you can swim and fish (catch and release), there are swings and climbing ropes for the kids. Campers are welcome to walk or cycle on the farm, but you’re not allowed to enter the veld with an off-road vehicle. During August and September, the colourful wildflowers are in bloom, and if you look closely, you may see a fish eagle or a black eagle soar above you.

The turn-off is at Kapteinskloof, 22 km from Piketberg, or on the R399 to Velddrif. From there, it’s 12 km of dirt road, but also pay attention to the peak in the distance: it’s Sonwyserskop. Although the campsite is named after it, you can’t see the peak itself from the campsite. The road isn’t really suitable for road caravans, as it gets sandy close to the campsite and you have to drive over a shallow stream. It’s, therefore, better to tow an off-road trailer or caravan with a vehicle that has decent ground clearance. Price When you book, the entire campsite is reserved for you and your friends. It’s R2 500 per night for up to 20 people; thereafter it’s R100 pp, with a maximum of 50 people allowed. Contact 066 526 3924 (WhatsApp only) facebook.com/sonwyserskop sonwyserskop@gmail.com
