What you need to know

Maximum number of vehicles? Unlimited. Do I get a map? No. Will I scratch my vehicle? It’s unlikely. Do I need a compressor? No. May I braai? Yes, at the picnic spots. Can I turn around halfway? Certain parts of the route are one way. Is there cellphone signal? Yes. Best time to go? All year round, but in January and February it gets really hot. Can I take my family along? Yes, definitely. May my dog join us? No, pets are strictly forbidden. Can I ride a motorcycle here? Large adventure bikes are allowed, but scramblers and quads are turned away.

How long does it take? It takes about three hours to explore all the roads.

Are there ablution facilities? Yes, at the picnic spots, and they are clean.

Directions Follow the road signs for the Afrikaans Language Monument through the suburb of Courtrai and drive along Gabbema Doordrift Road towards Paarlberg. A road sign 1 km before the Language Monument will send you along the Jan Phillips mountain road to the Paarlberg Nature Reserve.

Hours 07: 00-19: 00 (between 1 April and 30 September until 18:00).
