Big fish, Little Fish

Just outside Somerset East is a modest campsite where you can relax and catch a fish or two.

DIE KAIA HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Die Kaia is six kilometres outside Somerset East and lies on the Little Fish River, which flows towards Gqeberha and into the Indian Ocean. The campsite belongs to Festha Erasmus, and is on the farm Grootplaas, which belongs to her and her husband Danie. Fifteen years ago, there was nothing here, Festha says, but they were looking for a picnic spot outside the town where people could come to relax. There was already grass growing on the riverbanks, and the lapa and bathrooms were the first buildings to go up. The campsite continued to be developed, and now, as you drive in with the river in front of you, the caravan stands are to the left and the ones for tents are on your right. Here, you always camp near the water. The power points are ordinary domestic sockets, and the braai drums (with grids) are portable and you can drag one closer to your stand. Another bathroom building has been built, meaning both camps now have their own facilities. And, when you turn on the tap, the water is immediately hot, thanks to the gas geysers. The lapa has a communal kitchen for everyone to use, and there is a small lounge and bush bar. If you don’t have the time or inclination to set up camp, there are four permanent tents that sleep up to eight people combined. The water is safe for swimmers, and you can also catch various types of fish such as carp, yellowfish, barbel, and eel. There’s very much a farm feeling here. Festha says the idea is that you simply kick off your shoes and relax. Animals, including rabbits and chickens, also contribute to the atmosphere, but that means your own pets must stay home.
