What you need to know

-

Maximum number of vehicles Unlimited. Do I get a map? No.

Can I turn around halfway? Yes. Is there cellphone signal? Sometimes, but most often not.

Best time to go? The waterfall runs in full force during December, but the roads are muddy – and not everyone likes that.

Can my family tag along? Yes, definitely.

And my dog? Yes, totally.

Can I go on my motorcycle? Yes, you’ll often see motorcycles around here. Just for the day or the weekend? Aday trip is enough.

How long does it take? It’s three hours from the Sappi sign to the start of Mariepskop Pass, and then an hour to the waterfall. One hour back downhill and another two hours back to Graskop via the Abel Erasmus Pass and Bourke’s Luck. The latter is farther, yes, but it’s torture to drive the shortcut through Bushbuckridge to Graskop, so set aside a day for this route.

Are there ablution facilities? No. Directions Graskop is a small town at the foot of the Blydepoort ravine, about 15 km east of Pilgrims Rest in Mpumalanga.

Price Free – this is a public road.
