Watch soapies in your car
The UK Department of Transport is considering amendments to its highway code so Britons will be allowed to watch videos and streaming services in selfdriving cars.
The department admits Britain currently has no fully autonomous vehicles, but it is preparing for the inevitable future.
The modifications only apply to cars in which a video screen is installed by the vehicle manufacturer themselves, and then on condition that the image is automatically switched off by the vehicle as soon as the person in the driver’s seat takes control.
It’s for this reason that the use of a cellphone by the “driver” will remain illegal – a self-driving car can’t switch off a cellphone when the artificial intelligence decides it’s necessary.
The department also says that should a self-driving car be involved in a collision, the owner of the vehicle will not necessarily be held liable. Interesting times ahead…
