New bush camp in Hoedspruit

-

In Hoedspruit, you’re only 45 minutes from the Orpen Gate and 61 minutes from the Phalaborwa Gate of the Kruger National Park. Give yourself a few extra days for your next Kruger Park visit and check out the new campsite Maru Djembe. It’s only 14 km outside the town in the direction of Phalaborwa.

Camping in these regions means enjoying nature to the fullest. You don’t need an off-road vehicle or offroad caravan to get to Maru Djembe

– it’s accessible to any sedan and road caravan, but you still get a full bush experience. (There’s only 1,5 km of dirt road after turning off the tar road.)

You camp among wild animals, but none that would consider you prey. There is a good chance that a hyena will stop by at night, and you will probably see giraffes drinking from the pool, zebras, sable antelopes, kudus, blue wildebeest, and buffalo. You may not drive around the 180 ha with your own vehicle, but if you wish to explore the area, you can take the children on a 5 km hiking trail.

A few braais are dotted randomly in clearings – there are currently seven unmarked stands. They are also planning two private stands, each with its own outdoor shower.

The large open thatched building is for everyone’s use, and this is where you’ll find the sink for doing the dishes. The men’s and women’s toilets are in the building next door, and the showers in the building next to that – in two rooms with open showers and toilets.

Paraffin is used to heat water. You have to buy your own paraffin (available at R30/ℓ) – one litre will easily last two nights for a family of four. Two minutes after lighting the paraffin, you can take a hot shower.

Across from the large thatched roof is an amphitheatre with concrete benches that used to be a farm dam. The round pool is next door.

The bush camp’s name is derived from a marula tree and the djembe drum. You’ll be welcomed by owners Claudia van der Merwe and Yolandi Riekert. Even though you’re deep in the bush here, there is cellphone signal, but no electricity.

Price R400 pn per stand (for up to four people). Pets are welcome.
