Go! Drive & Camp

Peace and quiet in the gorge

-

The name Berg en Bos seems appropriate for this new campsite outside Brits. Krokodilpoort is a farm owned by Peet and Yvonne Victor where you can simply relax and enjoy the bushveld’s natural beauty.

The farm lies in a gorge with the Crocodile River forming a border on one side. Upstream on the opposite bank is the famous Drie Berge caravan park.

There are three groups of stands: four higher up (with two under shade net and the other two with shade), three 50 m from the river, and two farther downstream. Next to the upper stands is a small ablution block with two bathrooms, each with a shower, sink and toilet – the geyser is powered by electricity here. The three stands closer to the river have reed fences for privacy and the bathroom facilities are rustic. You shower in the open air – here too you have a reed fence – and your hot water comes from a donkey. There is a flush toilet.

Each stand has a power point (regular domestic socket) and tap, and you can bring a braai drum closer when it’s time to light the fire.

See if you can catch a carp or black bass on the hook if you feel like fishing.

The Victor children have made great strides with swimming, and their success is due in part to the pool they had built specially. The two-lane swimming pool is 25 m long and is kept at 26 °C throughout the year (except in June and July). Campers may also use the swimming pool.

If you’d rather just take a seat and chill in the water, there is a heated splash pool by the top stands.

This is a farm, and the access road is not accessible to all caravans – longer caravans especially will struggle with some of the bumps. Rather tow an off-road caravan. The first kilometre after you turn off is paved, with the last 2 km a twin-track. Price R400 pn per stand for up to four people. No pets allowed.
