Go! Drive & Camp

A dream come true

-

Mike and Dawn Solyom have always wanted to own a campsite, and in November their dream came true. The 170 ha Rotsinbos Private Game Farm lies 23 km outside Brits, North West. The couple are campers themselves and therefore know what people like and don’t like. The 19 stands are all laid out in the bush on veld grass, and each has its own lock-up bathroom.

The private bathrooms are in five buildings among the stands. You get a shower and basin, with the loo in a separate room. The dishwashing sink is on the outside of the bathroom, and gas geysers provide hot water.

The buildings were built with face bricks to match the rocky hill behind the stands, Dawn explains. (The sunsets are spectacular from the top.)

There are plenty of shade trees here, and the stands are well equipped: you get a power point (domestic type), a freestanding steel braai with a grid, and a tap with water from a borehole. The pool and jungle gyms are a five-minute walk from the campsite and are also used by the guests of the lodge on the farm.

The lodge and the campsite sit inside a 13 ha camp with an electrified fence. Inside the fence, expect to see animals such as nyala, warthogs and impalas (there is a greater variety on the rest of the farm). Campers are welcome to go walking or cycling, but you may not go for a game-watching drive in your own vehicle. Game drives are available – they cost R150 pp and take at least an hour. On such a drive you can also see blue wildebeest, waterbuck, blesbuck, giraffes, zebra and kudu.

The last 5 km to the campsite is a wellmaintained gravel road, and you can therefore tow a normal caravan. The first half goes through vegetable farms and the last 2,5 km is on the game farm itself. The new office is under construction and will include a kiosk. Meanwhile, you can buy ice and braai wood here.

If you don’t yet own a caravan, the Solyoms have an off-road caravan available to rent. They’re planning some bush stands near the swimming pool, each with an outdoor shower and covered flushing toilet, and then work is also being done on a group of stands deeper into the bush where you can wild camp with a wood-fired hot tub as the only ammenity.

Price R650 pn per stand for up to four people; thereafter R150 pp extra. Entry for a second vehicle costs R100.
