Go! Drive & Camp

HOW DO OUR FACEBOOK FRIENDS CHOOSE A STAND?

-

Piet Botha I prefer shade in the afternoon and stand on grass, but paving is good too (and better when it rains). Not a stand under trees, because then the birds mess on the tent and caravan. Close to the bathroom is also good.

Kobus Horn I don’t camp under trees or in a hollow. That’s where you’ll find snakes and monkeys, and where rainwater pools. The monkeys play in the trees – that’s also where snakes can get in.

Herman Swart Places like Weltevrede outside Parys have covered stands, paving and the most beautiful grass.

Stef du Raan We prefer a level stand on grass with a shade tree that is not too far from the bathrooms.

Chris and Alida Laing We camp with a tent and look for shade on a stand that is as level as possible; how far the bathrooms doesn’t matter. Also, nice and far from others, but then again, you meet interesting people in the campsite when sitting around the campfire.

Peet van Rooyen Since I discovered the Richtersveld, West Coast and eco-routes, that’s where I keep returning to: places where there is nothing and nobody. It’s an adventure and now I struggle when camping next to people.

Then I might as well set up on my lawn in my front yard.

Neil Williams Give me the bush with no people in sight.

Marthie van Breda Wetryto get a little shade – and escape the afternoon sun.

Elaine Barnard Venter I camp deep in the bush, or wherever I can find space – especially in the Kruger.

Marius Hendriks I camp with friends or anyone… under a tree or somewhere under the stars. Amenities are a bonus, but a bush or wild camp is best.

Kewp Rose Preferably not under a tree. Set up so you can get together to the east of your caravan – that way the last rays of sun don’t bother you as you start the braai. Not too far from the bathrooms either, but as far as possible from the neighbours.

Agatha Ikking Give me a spot far away from any commotion, music and noise. So rather in the bush than commercialised places with activities such as water slides. In the winter, I look for more sun and in the summer, shade. Beware of ‘wilder’ places like Botswana and under trees where elephants quietly come to eat pods. Whether it’s soil or grass doesn’t matter, but never again near the sea. The wind does not stop blowing as your belongings also rust away.
