OVERLANDER

-

Last year, Overlander was one of the new faces with its Custom 590 model. It’s a luxurious double-axle caravan made of glass reinforced plastic, designed to tackle the bush. The Custom 490 was already in the pipeline, but the planned model underwent some changes, culminating in the brand-new Custom 500.

It’s a single-axle trailer, yet almost a clone of the 590. The width (2,1 m), height (2,6 m), head height (1,88 m), and wheel track (1,67 m) are the same, but the length differs: the 500 is 90 cm shorter than the 590 – 6,4 m compared to 7,3 m.

Other than the wheels, the placement of the fridge is the most noticeable difference. The 590’s fridge is located to your left as you enter, but you also get a fridge/freezer (a 50 ℓ National Luna) positioned right in front of you as you step in. In the 500, the fridge shifts to where the 590’s fridge/freezer is located, and in the doorway, you get two cupboards with a microwave oven above them.

The power box with all the circuit breakers also moves toward the door, in the little cabinet to your right. In the 590, it’s located in a cupboard just past the bed. The shower is slightly smaller, and there’s a bit less space on either side of the bed compared to the 590, even though the beds are the same size.

The 500 also has two outdoor sinks, but they are positioned slightly closer together because there isn’t a smaller bowl – as seen in the 590 – between the two.

The nose also changes, becoming more rounded. Besides aiding with wind resistance, it also provides more headroom above the sink in the bathroom.

The 500’s GVM differs by 1 000 kg compared to that of the 590: 2 000 kg for the 500 and 3 000 kg for the 590. The tare weights are respectively 1 790 kg and 2 480 kg.
