Team-builder helps others too

- MADELEINE CHAPUT

GONUBIE Round Table are preparing for an even bigger and better Bed Race day next year at the East London Race Track.

Started by the Midrand Round Table 25 years ago, the event is a team-building exercise which requires companies to buy hospital beds from Gonubie Round Table, decorate them as they’d like to and take part in a 4km race, which will be held on March 17.

Once the race is over, the hospital beds will then be donated to various schools and clinics in need.

Next year, Gonubie Round Table hopes to get 40 beds in the race and are challenging schools, supermarkets and other businesses around East London to take part in the fun-filled day.

Companies need to select a team of five members – four to push the bed to the finish line, with one “patient” on the bed.

The teams will face various obstacles along the way, testing them both mentally and physically.

With Buco as the main sponsor for the event, food stalls, music and various entertainment will be available for all taking part or supporting.

“We really want to get the public involved this year. It’s a great, fun and unique way to help those in need,” said Round Table member and organiser Dean Starbuck.
