Cyclists raise R150000
THE St Bernard's Hospice Pedal for a Purpose Cycle Challenge came to an end on Friday evening as 11 cyclists successfully returned from a challenging 374km ride from East London to Komani and back over three days.
The challenge managed to raise more than R150000 for St Bernard's Hospice, with donations continuing to stream in.
The much-needed funds will go towards caring for the many hospice patients with life-threatening diseases.
Ending off with a festive meet at the Country Bumpkin, the cycle challenge concluded with a special prize-giving to celebrate and thank the riders.
Ian Bernett, who managed to raise almost R20 000 extra for the organisation, received the award for most enthusiastic fundraiser.
Joining in as a cyclist for his ninth cycle challenge, Johannesburg resident Glen Brits has been coming down to the Eastern Cape to take part in the fundraiser every year since its inception. This bagged him a long-service award.
“It is a tough ride, but it is always a lot of fun with great people to keep you company along the way,” said Brits.
As World Tuberculosis Day took place on Saturday, the riders were challenged to cycle with TB masks, whether on their helmets or tied to their handle bars, in support of TB patients.
“TB does not have to be a killer. It can be managed with good care and lifestyle changes,” said St Bernard’s Hospice CEO Melissa Knox.
“For this reason we decided to challenge all our staff to walk around wearing TB masks and support the many TB patients and the challenges they go through in fighting their illness.”
Riders gracefully accepted the challenge, displaying their TB masks as a symbol of support and strength to those patients.
In closing, Knox thanked the many cyclists for their time and energy.
“I realise what it takes to make such a commitment and I hope that you have got back, over the last three days, what you have given to us. Thank you for your unwavering support and thank you for being our hospice heroes.
“This year the team spirit throughout the event has been phenomenal and I cannot begin to explain how much I appreciate everyone involved for making it a truly special event.”
