LIONS CHARITY BOWLS A SUCCESS

- DESMOND COETZEE

National Women’s Day was celebrated in different ways in various places in the country last week and while many were enjoying a day of rest, the King William’s Town Lions Club held a “Roll-a-Can” fundraising bowls day at the King William’s Town Bowling Club.

According to former Lion president Brian von der Decken last year’s theme was “Barefoot Bowls”, with players donating shoes that were handed out to the needy.

This time around, players brought along cans of food which will be distributed to the hungry in the community and used at the many soup kitchens the Lions Club operates in and around King William’s Town.

“The day ended with a prize-giving ceremony where, thanks to the generosity of local businesses, each participating team received an accolade as a token of appreciation for their efforts,” Von der Decken said.

“Two beautiful handmade blankets had been donated to the Lions Club and one of these was raffled, with the other auctioned off to further boost the funds of this project.”

Von der Decken added: “The recipients of the blankets, in a fine gesture of generosity, then donated the blankets back to the club to be auctioned off again at a later occasion.”

Lion president PJ Mauer thanked the KWT Bowling Club for the use of their facilities. They also expressed gratitude towards the many generous sponsors of prizes and cash contributions, as well as the players and their supporters.

“Thank you to the KWT Bowling Club for the use of these fine facilities. How can I also not say thank you to the Lions and Lions Ladies for making this day such a phenomenal success and most enjoyable?” Mauer said.

“All proceeds from Lions fundraisers go back to the community through the Lions service activities.”
