Tale of delivery despair
In a bid to expose how government corruption compromises housing delivery, the DA conducted an oversight inspection in Duncan Village informal settlements on Tuesday.
The delegates visited Dunga Street, which has been battling with a sewage spill for some time.
DA national spokesperson Solly Malatsi said Duncan Village remained a tale of despair and broken promises as the human cost of corruption continued to subject residents to the appalling unsanitary conditions.
“What we have seen here today shows that there has been no maintenance of services and the ANC government does not care enough to fix the sanitation in this area. We will come back with the DA councillors and activists for a clean-up. We will also apply pressure to whoever is not doing their work to do their work,” he said.
DA Councillor Isabel Thompson said she had reached out to ward councillors to fix the problem in the area, but her cries had fallen on deaf ears.
“I have reported this matter to the sanitation department, as well as ward councillors, and nothing has ever been done. I have driven through this area and every time my car stinks because of the smell of the dump these people have to live next to every day,” said Thompson.
DA Eastern Cape provincial legislature member Sanele Magaqa said: “The situation is not changing while the Buffalo City Municipality maintains that it has no money to fix the toilets which have been blocked for more than two years.
“Come 2020, we are preparing to take this municipality and ensure that this area is run by the DA.”
