To celebrate International Literacy Day, East London and Port Elizabeth primary schools went head to head in the Growsmart Literacy Competition held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) on Saturday.

The schools each had to select teams of three pupils each in grades 4, 5 and 6 respectively.

Pupils from the same grades were selected to each submit a story for the story-writing competition.

Growsmart founder Jewel Harris said the competition started off as a spelling bee in the Western Cape.

East London’s own Khanyisa Primary School came fourth and Triomf Primary School from Port Elizabeth won overall, walking away with a school improvement fund to the value of R25,000, as well as R2,500 per pupil and R1,500 for the mentor.

Magqabi Primary School came second and Caritas Primary third – both are from Port Elizabeth.
