The Canaan Care Centre recently received a donation of 17 Shonaquip wheelchairs to the value of R360 000, from the Swiss-based Raush Foundation, an organisation that focuses mainly on children with physical disabilities.

Centre manager Eleanor Saayman said the Small Projects Foundation had contacted the Rausch Foundation asking for help.

“The Small Projects Foundation is a non-profit organisation that is based in the Eastern Cape, which finds organisations that are in need of finances or any other necessities, and then finds funders for them,” Saayman said.

“We have been open for 12 years and most of the children do not have proper wheelchairs for their disabilities.

“The ones we have received will make a huge difference in the children’s lives.

“Our job is to provide a safe, stimulating and therapeutic environment in which children with disabilities can grow to their full potential.

“We encourage personal growth, independence, hard work and plenty of fun.

“The goal is to improve the child’s quality of life by finding practical solutions to help both the child and their family,” Saayman said.

“What the Rausch Foundation has done for our centre is the most gratifying thing because each child has a different disability, and these wheelchairs accommodate their needs.

“There are challenges but we always find a way to overcome them, and by putting more emphasis on the talents and the skills of the individual child, we can encourage their growth and development.”

Saayman said the centre donated about 10 of their old wheelchairs and other necessities to Nomzamo Special Care Centre in Peddie.
