Action galore in Heritage Day sport

It is that time of the year again when all roads will lead to the Breidbach Sports Grounds in King William’s Town for the sixth edition of the Heritage Day sports day, staged by Africans Sports Club this weekend.

Club public relations officer Sean Carelse said rugby and netball fans from King and surrounding areas would be entertained with a fun-filled day.

“Last year’s tournament coincided with our mother body’s 90th anniversary and was a remarkable event with an abundance of mouth-watering action on the rugby field and netball court. This year also promises to be a hit,” Carelse said.

“Our aim is to revive sport in general and create platforms for talented young players to showcase their skills and also reunite local former players scattered all over the country.

“This tournament inspired the birth of the promising Breidbach-based Young Wolves RFC, which played for the very first time last year and established themselves as a force to be reckoned with at the King Central District sub union rugby league.”

According to Carelse, guest teams from as far afield as Limpopo had confirmed their participation and defending champions Paterson Lions were also expected to take part.

Fireworks can also be expected at the netball competition as Balasi Valley’s defending champions Young Queens look forward to stiff competition from local teams such as Breidbach Professionals and Acorn Valley Shooters.

A whopping R5,000 prize money with floating trophies and medals are at stake for the winners of each code.

“We receive overwhelming support from the entire King community and this has given us the courage to keep on staging this event,” Carelse said. “Main attractions will include junior and legends rugby matches between Komani-based Old Collegians, Rubberhides and Africans and food stalls.”

He added that a donation would be offered to one of the local schools as part of their way to give back to the community.

“This is to assist with rugby development at school level,” he concluded.
