Merrifield Mile family fun ahead

- TARALYN MCLEAN

Time is ticking towards the start of KFC Merrifield Mile on Sunday at the Wriggleswade Dam.

With four events – 1.6km, 500m Dash, Terraforce 250m and a KFC Kids Fun Splash – there is something for everyone, from the serious athlete to the little swimmer looking to dip into the big dam.

“We really want to stress that the KFC Merrifield Mile and all the events on offer are geared towards catering for the whole family,” organiser Tracey Mangold said.

“Safety is paramount, with NSRI and other medical support onsite, and the distances are clearly marked with help on the water for any swimmer that may need it.

“We want to invite the whole family out to have fun here at Wriggleswade. There will be food and craft stalls, jumping castles and loads of prizes.”

Merrifield Prep School and College are proud to host the 17th edition of the annual event, and someone who has taken part in every Mile since inception, is Merrifield Prep head Debbie Lacey.

“The KFC Merrifield Mile encapsulates family time, healthy living and appreciation for the beautiful environment we live in.

“It’s a privilege to have been a part of the steering committee since the Mile’s inception and to see it grow into one of the major happenings on the East London sporting calendar,” Lacey said.

Entries are open at www.merrifieldmile.co.za until Friday morning and are also available at Merrifield School, Sportsmans Warehouse and Cycle HQ.

Swimmers can also enter at registration at Merrifield School on Saturday between 9am and 1pm.

Swimmers entered in all events will get bang for their buck as entry will guarantee a T-shirt, swimming cap, goodie bag and more.

There are also loads of prizes on offer for category winners, as well as lucky draw prizes, including a Stand Up Paddle from SUP South Africa Azstron worth R10,000 and two Swatch watches from Dennis Collins Jewellers, up for grabs.

This year KFC have come on board as the lead sponsor of the Mile, and other sponsors include Eco-Tanks, Stone Towers, Nutriwell, Dynamic EMS, Kat Leisure, Rance Timber, Stutt Group, Let’s Travel, Vincent Park, Terraforce EC, Visual Advertising, C&G Bodyworks, GO! & Express and Border Internet.
