Runners shine in the wet in Buffs Marathon

- AMANDA NANO

The 46th Buffs Marathon took place on a wet Sunday morning, with hundreds of runners taking part in the full marathon and half-marathon.

The 42.2km marathon started just outside Macleantown and the 21.1km half-marathon just outside Python Park.

The marathon also serves as a qualifier for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons later this year.

Winner of the ladies 21km race, Charlotte Firth from the UK, entered the competition for fun whilst visiting a friend.

“For me, the weather was perfect because it's similar back home.

“Had it been humid, I wouldn't have survived. I just thought it would be something fun to do as my friend is taking part in the 42.1km,” Firth said.

Yanga Malusi from Zwelonke Athletics club in Butterworth won the men’s 21.1km.

He is also the winner of the Bridle-Drift half-marathon held in February.

Malusi's coach Thulani Sidziya said the rural club was working hard on making a name for themselves.

In the full marathon, Luthando Hejana from Old Mutual Athletics Club took first place in the marathon with a time of 2:22:27.

Among the ladies, Ann Ashworth came in first place in the marathon in a time of 2:43:58.
