Motor meet-up

- DON BRYCE

East London car and motorcycle lovers used to have a custom of meeting up at various roadhouses to show off their vehicles and chat over burgers, ice creams or milkshakes.

This tradition has recently been revived at the aptly named Pit-Stop Roadhouse in Devereux Avenue, which is fast becoming a favourite meeting place for exotic, classic and old vehicles on the last Sunday of each month. Motoring clubs are also using the venue as a starting or ending point for their outings.

The most recent monthly Pit-Stop Meet-up on February 24 saw 32 interesting cars and bikes on the forecourt.

Out in force were motoring organisations such as the Border Hot Rod Classic and V8 Club, the Border Vintage Car Club, the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride and some privateers.

“The monthly Meet-up has grown and it's great that it's gaining its own momentum at last. It is also encouraging to see a number of younger enthusiasts attending,” event organiser Steve Heger said.

Pit-Stop owners Japie and Martie van Wyk are putting their full support behind the venture.

The next monthly Pit-Stop Meet-up is scheduled for March 31 from noon onwards.

Anyone with an unusual vehicle is welcome to display.
