Hilly race a tough run

- AMANDA NANO

Scores of athletes graced the third annual Galaxy Bingo 10km and 5km Challenge hosted by the Buffalo Runners Athletics Club (BRAC) in King William's Town on Saturday morning.

The challenge included several uphill and downhill routes through the suburbs – a real challenge for those unfamiliar with the terrain.

Coming in at a time of 31:02:21, Zuko Kupiso from Born 2 Run took first place in the 10km men's section.

“The hills were killing me, but I stuck it out and managed to win, which I'm very happy about,” Kupiso said.

Nedbank Running Club's ladies 10km winner Thembela van der Berg said she enjoyed the race and it was good for loosening muscles after the Buffs Marathon.

“The hills on this route are better, unlike the ones in Mdantsane. I’m looking forward to the Real Gijima's Ultra as I love ultras more than sprints,” Van der Berg said.

The route started at Lovedale College and ran through Durban Street, past Dale College sports fields, up Joubert Street and through Kaffrarian Heights.

BRAC chair Thembalethu Ngalwana said he's in awe of the huge turnout for the race and was appreciative of the clubs coming from afar.

“In 2018, we had less than 300 athletes competing, we have exceeded that number in 2019. We hope for bigger, better things in 2020 which we couldn’t have done without our sponsors and club members,” Ngalwana said.

He said that the biggest hurdle to such an event is sponsorship.
