Wilson brings charm to ‘Isn’t it Romantic’

- MATTHEW FIELD

I was originally planning on reviewing Netflix’s new film, Third Frontier, but the more I thought about it, the more I realised how little there really was to say about it.

It’s not bad but it’s not exactly good either and you’ll likely forget about it in a few days.

Instead, let’s talk about something much more fun and interesting: Isn’t it Romantic starring Rebel Wilson, Adam DeVine, Liam Hemsworth, and Priyanka Chopra.

Wilson plays a delightfully cynical character who, after an accident, finds herself the unwilling star of a PG-13 romantic comedy.

Wilson’s character is the best part of this film by far.

Watching her react to “typical” rom-com occurances like spontaneous musical numbers is always fun, especially when you remember her big break was staring in a similar series of movies (Pitch Perfect).

The supporting cast is also great fun to watch. DeVine plays an excellent straight man to Wilson’s more over-the-top persona and sells his role as the nice-guy side character we see in comedies.

Hemsworth is also surprisingly great playing a satirical take on the usual charming, confident macho man he and his brother usually play.

He manages to add just the right amount of sleaze that allows us to feel that something’s not quite right with him without making his character completely unlikeable.

Unfortunately, Chopra is the weak link here but that may be more to do with her limited screen time than her acting ability.

My only major criticism with this film is that, for all it’s talk of mocking rom-com tropes, it still relies heavily on them.

Wilson’s character still gets the guy and the dream job in the end and they even close off with a big music number out of nowhere.

Wilson’s sheer charisma and talent more than make up for it and Isn’t It Romantic remains a fun, if slightly unfocused, romp.
