Trust’s bid to build pupils classrooms

- MATTHEW FIELD

Greensleeves Children’s Trust is calling on members of the public to assist in its campaign to raise funds for a new classroom for its grade 3 and 4 pupils.

The trust, based in Brakfontein, serves as a home and primary school for over 40 orphaned and vulnerable children. Fundraising and volunteer co-ordinator Sarah Erasmus said 40% of schools in the Eastern Cape had a class size of over 40 pupils per teacher which prevented pupils from establishing any firm educational foundation.

“In response to this problem, our school in East London provides quality primary education to children from all backgrounds, 60% of whom are classified as orphaned or vulnerable,” Erasmus said.

“This project will provide our 10 grade 3 and 4’s with their own classroom where they can receive a quality education.”

Erasmus said the new classroom won’t just benefit the current pupils but future pupils as well.

“In 10 years’ time, for example, another 50 disadvantaged grade 3 and 4s in East London will have had the opportunity to enjoy good-quality schooling and improved life chances,” said Erasmus.

She also added that Greensleeves was investing in solar power to improve its long-term financial sustainability as well as its ecological footprint.

In addition to the classroom, Greensleeves is also hoping to secure a permanent position with GlobalGiving, a crowdfunding platform which focuses on charities, non-profit (NPO) and non-government organisations (NGO).

According to the Greensleeves’ GlobalGiving page at the time of writing, they have 10 days to raise $5,000 (R72,000) .
