Can of Worms’ new single ‘Pillow’ tackles GBV

- MATTHEW FIELD

East London band Can of Worms dropped their new single Pillows on Friday.

Band member Dalena Mostert said the song tackles the issue of genderbased violence (GBV) in relationships.

“We wrote this song some time in 2020. It was during the 16 Days of Activism against GBV,” Mostert said.

“We were playing around with ideas and we started chatting about the topic.

“It was sparked by the general prevalence of GBV; it just doesn’t stop. The media is trying to alert people, but week after week we keep seeing it.”

Mostert said the song’s musical style was a commentary on the ways GBV can remain hidden in a relationship.

“We’ve taken a very interesting approach in that when you listen to it the first time, you hear a very upbeat jolly melody, it’s a little bit jazzy and poppy. When you listen to the words you immediately see that it has a dark underbelly,” she said.

“That is typical of these kinds of relationships. You find that no-one knew this was going on.

“People will say, ‘We all thought they were an ideal couple. We never suspected anything was wrong’.

“It is not OK for any person to be the victim of abuse within a relationship.”

While the single is a stand-alone project for now, Mostert said the band was working on an album which they hoped to release later this year.

“We feel confident that releasing songs in a single format gives audiences a chance to know us better.”

The single’s release comes shortly after Can of Worms’ concert alongside US blues legend Doc McLean in

Chintsa and Stutterheim in February, which Mostert described as a “fabulous” performance.

“We had so much fun doing that, we learnt so much from him,” she said.

“For the short time that we had to promote it, we actually had wonderful crowds. We had a lovely turnout.

“Both being intimate venues, it was perfectly suited.”

Mostert thanked everyone who continued to support them during lockdown.

“Now that people are becoming more aware that live shows are happening again, we hope that people, in numbers, will feel free to come out and support live shows,” she said.

Pillows is available on Spotify, YouTube and other music streaming platforms. - DispatchLive
