Author’s new children’s books inspired by pain of separation
Potgieter to hold launches in Port Alfred, Makhanda and Gqeberha
Roz Potgieter is a former East London author, currently based in Australia, who has created a series of children’s books by using her two granddaughters, Anastasia and Gabriella, as her muses.
The colourful books are beautifully illustrated and provide children with fun and exciting ways to explore their imaginations, while learning something new.
“My children’s books are based on my two precious granddaughters Gabriella and Anastasia, who unfortunately live continents away. I wanted to share my experiences in other countries with them and decided to transform my pain from being away from them into purpose.
“They each have their own series as well as a joint series.”
The Anastasia Grace’s Mystical Adventures tell stories of a brave island girl who goes on exciting explorations with her magical locket and her enchanted pashmina rocket.
The Gabriella Rose’s Dream series tells tales of an adventurous girl who explores iconic Australian attractions in her dreams.
The third series, GabAna, based on both girls, introduces children to important concepts of life-like kindness, being helpful, respectful, happy, friendly and truthful.
These books are written in a rhyme format and are designed for parent and child interaction through fun question and answer components.
”I draw inspiration from conversations I have with people, from dreams and nightmares. I am also inspired by people I’ve met, loved, loathed or been married to.
”And, sometimes I have no idea how I got an idea,” Potgieter said.
“All my creative endeavours go through preliminary stages, in which I generate ideas, discard some, and play with others that capture my imagination or that simply seem to ‘fit the bill’ in the chapter I’m working on at the time.
“A children’s book takes me a day to write. Once I have the basic idea, it just flows.”
Potgieter, whose writing journey started when she was 10, has also written a series of books called Benjamin’s Talking Bum and the educational Sipho and Co series that aims to teach children about the different
ethnic groups of SA.
“I have written 25 books, of which 17 have been published so far. Each story has a whimsical and educational element.
“Deceit by Design is probably my favourite book, as this was my first, coupled with my Mom’s belief in my ability, and her enthusiasm throughout my writing journey means the world to me. I am currently in collaboration with my brother. We’re working on a political thriller.”
As part of the promotion of her books, Potgieter does readings of her books at day care centres and primary schools and promotes them at topical events.
The books are sold at various markets in Australia and online.
Potgieter will be hosting official book launches in Gqeberha at Walmer Park on March 30. In April she will host book launches in Makhanda and Port Alfred.
East London and other city dates will be announced her website closer to the dates, at www.rozpotgieter.com.
