Community Action Africa, the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), Department of Transport and Absa hosted the fourth annual Maths and Science exhibition for high school pupils in Buffalo City on Friday at Eden High in Southernwood.

Community Action Africa (CAA) is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) which supports pupils from disadvantaged schools to accomplish improved educational successes.

The organisation provides extra classes in various learning areas.

CAA also coordinates academic events such as interschools debate competitions, maths and science exhibitions and career guidance expos.

The director of CAA, Musa Sebugwawo, said the exhibition was launched in 2017, but was put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and resumed this year.

The theme for 2022 was Maths and Science for Inclusive Development in the Eastern Cape.

“What we are trying to achieve with the Maths and Science exhibhition is to create an environment where pupils can see what they are learning in the classroom and the applicability in the real world.”

During the exhibition, pupils were informed how maths and science was necessary in different career fields.

A Department of Transport representative in road safety, Simthembile Mpayipeli, said the exhibition was a well-thought campaign to encourage pupils in their maths and science studies.

“For us as the road safety section for the Department of Transport in the Eastern Cape, it will always be important to attend such events as we play a role in linking those subjects to the fields of study that is relevant to saving peoples lives.”

Mpayipeli said maths and science were important subjects for many career fields, including when it i came to road safety.

“As road safety we have a decade of action from 2020 to 2030 that relies on five pillars.

“Pillar number four declares safer road users, and we cannot begin to talk about safer road users without talking about the roads and the vehicles that road users drive.

“Now when talking about road design, road engineering and road construction, maths and science will be vital.

“When we talk vehicle design, vehicle manufacturing and the safety features in the vehicle and the maintenance of those vehicles, all of these need qualified experts that have done maths and science in school,” said Mpayipeli.
