Artist hosts live listening event in honour of album
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Crown Gospel Music nominee celebrates a decade in the music industry through a live listening session of his third studio album titled I Promise To Be Honest that was hosted at Coffiks in Vincent on Saturday, April 30 2022.
Nkululeko Mdangayi, who is well known by the stage name of Incense, performed 12 songs out of the albums 13 tracks during the listening session.
He said the song which speaks to him the most is track number three of the album, also titled ‘I Promise To Be Honest .
“It is a song really close to’ my heart. I was in the perfect frame of mind when I wrote it. It captures the theme of the album.
“It’s about where I am in terms of my musical aspirations, where I am spiritually and ultimately where I am relationally.”
Mdangayi said being able to share his music with the world and receiving a nomination at the SABC Gospel Crown Music Awards in 2018 for Best Rap category for his second album titled was a highlight in his career over the past 10 years.
“This has to be the ultimate highlight and working with USbased Grammy Award Nominee producer Tone Jonez,” he said.
The Soweto born musician describes his current album as one that is much happier and brighter compared to the previous one.
“This is a sonically colourful album that will make you feel it’s OK to embrace your creative self.
“It will make you feel it’s OK to stretch beyond your comfort zone, that it’s OK to make your mental health a priority.”
He further explains the album to be a body of work that makes you feel that it is OK to let go of relationships that have expired, and at the same time it will make you feel it’s OK to embrace love, family, friends and the beauty of your upbringing.
“It will make you feel it’s OK to walk in God’s love and purpose for your life.
“It is a promise to be honest to self, to God and His people.” he said.
