Creative barber a cut above the rest

This week we chat to WAHL-certified male groomer James Dollery about his career in haircutting

- FAITH MTWANA

What products/service do you offer?

My services include gents and boys’ haircuts, signature cuts, fades, hot towel shaving, beard styling, nose and ear waxing. I also have a range of organic beard oil treatments in lemon grass, tea tree and cedar wood fragrances. They have moisturizing, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. I also sell Reuzel wax which manufactured in the Netherlands.

When and how did your business start?

I started my business in mid-2021. Two years ago I treated myself to a signature cut and thoroughly enjoyed the unique social experience and service. I’m a bit of an old soul and love everything vintage and old school. I am also creative and like the fact that each day is different and you can work at your own pace.

Where and how did you learn your barber skills?

I studied at The Beauty Academy and completed the WAHL Men’s Method undergraduate programme. I follow online barbers and watch tutorials to further improve my skills. I am always learning, as I need to keep up with the current trends. Before I opened my business, I had the opportunity to shadow an experienced barber and did a three-month apprenticeship with him.

How many people do you work with?

Recently I was contacted by Lynne and

Kevin Corby from Sculptures Hair in Vincent, and given the amazing opportunity to work in The Male Room Men’s Grooming Lounge. My colleague is Quimeth, an experienced barber and our lovely barista, Sive.

What do you think sets you apart from other similar businesses in the area?

Our clients are treated to a range of services in our stylish and exclusive men’s grooming lounge, where you will receive first class treatment in a relaxing environment. Our clients can enjoy a complimentary cappuccino, refreshment, whiskey or cigar while they wait for their treatment.

What are some of the challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?

I have ADD and can be a little OCD. I went through a stage where my confidence was low and I would overthink everything, causing anxiety. One day something just clicked, and with the support of my family and their belief in me, I decided to put my heart into barbering. I am pedantic about cleanliness and enjoy working in an organised space. When I put my mind to something, I give it my all. I am passionate about barbering. Also, I made many mistakes in the beginning, but like any trade, you have to keep improving your skills and craft and never stop learning. I practised on all my friends who enjoyed free cuts for a while.

Do you have any proud moments that you have had in your business so far?

Every time a client leaves with a smile or pays a compliment, is a proud moment for me. It is rewarding when I see the “before and after” results and a client looks and feels good about himself. That’s all that matters.

What are some of you goals for 2023?

My dream is to become a master barber. I always want to improve my skills and further my qualification in the barbering field.

What advice do you have for someone who is interested in a similar line of business?

You should be a creative person and be dedicated. You must enjoy working with people and be engaging. Barbers must be organised and take pride in their work. You must have a good work ethic and strive to work in a sanitary environment. It’s important to listen to your clients, keep up with the latest trends and don’t fear trying something new. Also a very important factor is to only use professional barbering equipment.
