Pathway finally undergoing repair

Nahoon beach facility had become dangerous

- TAMMY FRAY

After years of complaints, March 24 saw BCM parks and recreation undertake repair work and upgrades of the walkway leading from the parking lot to the Nahoon Beach.

Ward councillor Jason Mc Dowell has been sourcing donations for lights to be fitted on the pathway to aid visibility. Mc Dowell said that he has been incessantly reporting safety and security issues with the walkway throughout his terms in office.

“Its fantastic to see work being done now its much appreciated,” said Mc Dowell.

Nahoon Beach Community in Blue members said that a lack of maintenance as well as insufficient light made the pathway unsafe to use early in the morning and at night.

Volunteer Lindsay Pollock said, “We are thrilled about the repair. It had become dangerous with loose boards and gaps and could not be used by elderly beach goers.

“The Nahoon community keeps the ablutions repaired and clean. BCM plays no role as they don’t have the funds.

“The showers outside the Lifesavers Shack have not worked for years and looking into repairing that would be the next step.”

Ahead of the festive season last year, business owner Dean Knox, in collaboration with Border surf riders and On Tap, contributed towards repairing and upgrading toilet infrastructure at two of Nahoon beach’s ablution facilities.

Knox said more needed to be done in terms of putting a municipal beach management plan in place and an emergency action plan that assists ambulances trying to reach

Nahoon during peak times on weekends and during holidays.

Earlier this year, a report by the metro’s infrastructure services head indicated that of R35.8m budget BCM spent R27.1m dealing with theft, vandalism and illegal connections, infringing on funds needed to carry out repair work and upgrades on infrastructure at places such as Nahoon beach.
