Retired teacher explores artistic side

We chat to Elda Kruger about her business Heartfelt Ceramic Gifts

- FAITH MTWANA

What services or products do you offer?

Heartfelt Ceramic Gifts does not only offer beautiful handmade ceramic gifts for every occasion but also ceramic painting and clay work classes for children and adults.

When did your business start?

My Heartfelt journey started at the end of 2020 when I retired from teaching.

How did the idea come about?

Retirement and passion for ceramics granted me the opportunity to turn my knowledge of ceramics into a full-time business.

How did you discover your ceramic skills?

I had the privilege of taking classes with Iona Bennie, who taught me the necessary skills and helped me realise that I have a talent in ceramics. I taught art at Hudson Park Primary School for 19 years, with the last nine years spent at the art academy, which helped me hone my ceramic skills.

Describe your creative process. Pottery making is not just a

creative process but also a labour-intensive one. From start to finish the stages are; make the pot, dry for at least three days, put it in the fire kiln at 1,000° C for six hours, cool down for four

hours, paint or dip in glaze, and fire again at 1200°C.

How many people/staff do you currently work with?

As my business is still young and

small, I don’t have any employees.

What satisfaction do you get out of doing the work that you do?

The process of creating ceramics involves a lot of creative thinking and problem solving, which are two processes I thoroughly enjoy.

What are some of the challenges that you have faced in your business and how have you overcome them?

What I find most challenging is the fact ceramic-making is very time-consuming. It is easy to find inspiration but not so easy to find the time to execute all the ideas.

Can you share any advice for someone who wants to start their own business?

After finding your niche, it is important to do enough research to see whether there is a market for your product. Create products that are unique and that you are passionate about. Even though owning your own business can be very rewarding, you will work much harder for yourself than for a boss. Stick to your business plan even though it is easier said than done. Marketing your business and building a good relationship with your customers are of the utmost importance.

What are your future plans or goals for your business?

I plan to extend my pottery classes and create more unique products, such as ShweShwe range.
