Cake Decorators Guild celebrates 21 years
The East London branch of the SA Cake Decorators Guild (SACDG) will be hosting a celebration on Saturday April 20 in honour of their 21st birthday. The organisation has been embracing and sharing the art of cake decorating and sugarcrafting and has grown to 20 members, with many older members still involved.
SACDG East London chair Ria Smith said the organisation was committed to developing individual talent and sharing knowledge and expertise.
“Sugarcrafting has evolved. The cake decorating tools have become so much easier as, in the past, the decorator had to make most of their own tools,” she said.
“Today, these tools are made for us.
“This has resulted in expert decorators throughout the country,” Smith said.
The organisation was founded by Marie Swarts in 1976, who went on to open
branches in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Gqeberha.
The East London branch was launched by Belinda Kretzman in 2003.
Shows, exhibitions and demonstration days are regularly held throughout the country.
Marie Halberstadt joined the East London branch in 2006 and has grown her sugarcraft skills.
“My experience as a member of the Cake Decorators Guild has been an exciting journey.
“When the ladies get together once a month there is so much to learn and share.
“Our passion for sugar art is exciting.
“New trends keep us on our toes to update our skills and keep up to date.
“Celebrating the East London branch’s 21st birthday is a huge achievement.”
A birthday celebration will be hosted at the Dutch Reformed Church in Vincent with the theme ‘Van toeka tot nou’ meaning ‘From the olden days until now’.
The agenda of the day includes cupcake and biscuit decorating sessions for the kids, sugarcraft display tables, and the sale of cakes and cake decorating tools.
