Fort Hare, WSU take on SA’s best rowers
The University of Fort Hare (UFH) and Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Rowing Clubs recently competed in the annual University Sports SA Sprints Regatta that was held at Stellenbosch University.
Both teams achieved excellent results with UFH achieving sixth place overall and WSU making it to the finals.
UFH sent 26 athletes, with the men’s team achieving third place and the women’s team achieving sixth.
Lunga Chase Mcetywa, the coach of the UFH team, said the competition was a great opportunity for the team to not only compete at a high level, but learn more about sportsmanship.
“Competing in Cape Town
provided a unique experience, fostering a sense of camaraderie among participating universities.
“Shared accommodations and dining arrangements brought athletes together, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and sportsmanship, which added to the overall enjoyment of the event,” Mcetywa said.
UFH rower, Avuyile Magazi, shared his experience about competing at his first-ever rowing tournament.
“It was the first time being there and I enjoyed the races, as well as the bond with other rowers. Seeing the other rowers highlighted for me where I need to practise and improve. It is encouraging to meet all these players knowing that next time we meet again, they will see the improvement.
“Rowing is painful but it is great to celebrate the hard work in the end,” Magazi said.
WSU had eight team members who competed, five of whom made it into the finals. The ladies’ team also won their B finals.
Asekho Nombokotwana, who came in sixth in her race, credits her supportive teammates and coach.
“It was my second time experiencing the USSAs. It was great, and fun. I had a supportive team and coach.
“It was exhausting, but I feel like we did great. With a lot more trining as a team, I believe that we will be on top. If we work hard and train hard, we can achieve whatever we want to achieve,” Nombokotwana said.
